Are you a fan of Katherine Applegate's The One and Only Ivan? If you loved reading about Ivan, then you MUST check this nonfiction companion book out! Happy reading!

In a spare, powerful text and evocative illustrations, the Newbery medalist Katherine Applegate and the artist G. Brian Karas present the extraordinary real story of a special gorilla.
Captured as a baby, Ivan was brought to a Tacoma, Washington, mall to attract shoppers. Gradually, public pressure built until a better way of life for Ivan was found at Zoo Atlanta. From the Congo to America, and from a local business attraction to a national symbol of animal welfare, Ivan the Shopping Mall Gorilla traveled an astonishing distance in miles and in impact.
This is his true story and includes photographs of Ivan in the back matter.

Book of the Day by Mrs. Mattei

Are you a fan of the Texas Bluebonnet Award winning book The Day the Crayons Quit?? If you are, you are in for a REAL treat! Today's book of the day comes from acclaimed author/illustrator duo Drew Daywalt & Oliver Jeffers. Check this gem out!

I'm not sure what it is about this kid Duncan, but his crayons sure are a colorful bunch of characters. Having soothed the hurt feelings of one group who threatened to quit, Duncan now faces a whole new group of crayons asking to be rescued From Maroon Crayon, who was lost beneath the sofa cushions and then broken in two after Dad sat on him; to Burnt Sienna, who was eaten by the dog and then puked up on the living room rug ("NOT "pretty, Duncan); to poor Turquoise, whose head is now stuck to one of Duncan's socks after they both ended up in the dryer together; to Pea Green, who knows darn well that no kid likes peas and who ran away, changing his name to Esteban the Magnificent--each and every crayon has a woeful tale to tell and a plea to be brought home to the crayon box.
Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers have combined to create a companion book every bit as funny and kid-friendly as the #1 bestselling "The Day the Crayons Quit."

Book of the Day by Mrs. Mattei

Happy Friday, Sonntag Community! Today's book of the day is brought to you by one of my favorite children's book author/illustrators Oliver Jeffers. He has an amazing and has been nominated and has won several awards for his work. I've featured one of his books at GMS before and couldn't pass this book up. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Happy reading!

"If words make up the stories and letters make up the words, then stories are made up of letters. In this menagerie we have stories made of words, made FOR all the letters."
The most inventive and irresistible book of the year spans a mere 26 letters (don't they all ) and 112 pages. From an Astronaut who's afraid of heights, to a Bridge that ends up burned between friends, to a Cup stuck in a cupboard and longing for freedom, "Once Upon an Alphabet" is a creative tour de force from A through Z. Slyly funny in a way kids can't resist, and gorgeously illustrated in a way readers of all ages will pour over, this series of interconnected stories and characters explores the alphabet in a way that will forever raise the bar.
In "Once Upon an Alphabet," #1 "New York Times "bestseller Oliver Jeffers has created a stunning collection of words and artwork that is a story book, alphabet book, and gorgeously designed art book all in one.

Book of the Day by Mrs. Mattei

I love to sleep. Don't you?? In today's book of the day a little girl is desperately trying to avoid going to sleep. To help her fall asleep, she wonders if all things go to sleep at night. It's a beautiful book written by Mary Logue and earned the Randolf Caldecott Honor Award in 2013. Please check this book out! Happy reading! :)

In this magical bedtime story, the lyrical narrative echoes a Runaway Bunny – like cadence: Does everything in the world go to sleep? the little girl asks. In sincere and imaginative dialogue between a not-at-all sleepy child and understanding parents, the little girl decides in a cocoon of sheets, a nest of blankets, she is ready to sleep, warm and strong, just like a tiger. The Caldecott Honor artist Pamela Zagarenski’s rich, luminous mixed-media paintings effervesce with odd, charming details that nonsleepy children could examine for hours. A rare gem.
