Books of the Day by Mrs. Mattei!

Today's recommendations are for those girls out there that love pink and would love to be a real princess some day!

Are you feeling PINK today? This series of books by Victoria Kann is wildly popular at our library and I just HAD to share the amazing Pinkalicious website! Check these out! Happy reading!

After eating too many pink cupcakes, Pinkalicious turns pink and enjoys everything about being her favorite color.

Pinkalicious decides to earn money to buy pink gumballs by selling pink lemonade, but her first effort to make the drink pink by adding grapefruit, watermelon, frosting, and beets, is not a great success.

When Pinkalicious brings her imaginary unicorn, Goldie, to school and teaches him the rules, he helps her and the other students to become better friends.

Pinkalicious's new ice skates are plain white, so before she takes them out on the ice she decides to color them with her cotton candy pink magic marker.

Librarian A-La-Cart! :)

What a nifty day to be a librarian! In an effort to serve as many classes as possible before TAKS, I loaded up a cart of books, hooked a laptop onto a cart, and away I went (along with my amazing library assistant). Students who are taking the TAKS tests this week need to have a fresh new book to read and staying in the library wasn't going to do. Therefore, if I couldn't have all classes come to the library I would just go to them! It seemed to be a great success and the students thought it was the "bees knees" to check their books out from outside their classroom doors. I plan to do this to meet the needs of my amazing patrons in the future! :)

My handy-dandy library cart and laptop ready to get fresh books into the hands of students!

2nd Grade Wants to Live Happily Ever After....

This week, the 2nd grade students, teachers, and Mrs. Mattei teamed up to explore a wide variety of Cinderella tales! Each day, Mrs. Mattei read a different Cinderella story from around the globe. Students learned the characteristics of what makes a fairy tale from their fabulous teachers. Students also learned the importance of citing their sources each day. Since you cannot travel around the world without a passport, each student received a passport along with a stamp for each book they heard. Here are the Cinderella books that were explored:

Day 1: Egypt

Rhodopes, a slave girl living in ancient Egypt, is chosen by the Pharaoh to be his queen.

Day 2: Korea

In this version of Cinderella set in ancient Korea, Pear Blossom, a stepchild, eventually comes to be chosen by the magistrate to be his wife.

Day 3: Persia

A retelling of the traditional Persian tale in which Settareh, neglected and abused by her stepmother and stepsisters, finds her life transformed with the help of a little blue jug.

Day 4: China

A young Chinese girl overcomes the wickedness of her stepsister and stepmother to become the bride of a prince.

Cindy Ellen loses one of her diamond spurs at the square dance in this wild western retelling of the classic Cinderella story.

Mrs. Mattei goes to TLA!!!

I had a fantastic time at the Texas Library Association (or TLA) conference in Austin, Texas last week! I learned A LOT about the craft of school librarianship as well as gained some great ideas to implement in the Sonntag library in the very near future. I had the privilege of meeting authors, illustrators, poets, as well as a number of other librarians from around the great state of Texas. I hope that what I learned will help continue to shape the Sonntag library. Furthermore, I hope that the Sonntag library will continue to be a great place for students, teachers, parents, and the community to learn and enjoy!

Check out the pictures below to take a peek into my journey at TLA:
